Local Attractions

The cottage is a great base for exploring the Northern Highlands – we are 1 hour from Inverness, 2 hours from John o’Groats and 1 hour from the rugged hills of the west coast. This means you could actually do the whole of the North Coast 500 (NC500) in bite size chunks.

Close at hand, there are walks through woodland, along the shore at Dornoch or over the hills. There are opportunities for salmon, trout or sea fishing. Golf is available at Royal Dornoch (20 minutes away) or at any of the other 21 course in the area: the delightful 9 hole Bonar course is only 2 miles away. There are several mountain biking courses in the area and lots of quiet country roads to  suit cyclists of all ages and experience.

Or you could visit Dunrobin Castle ancestral home of the Dukes of Sutherland or visit the settlements abandoned during the Highland Clearances. Or go further back in time to follow the Pictish Trail and visit Iron Age brochs.

Wildlife abounds: from red deer on the hills and roe deer in the woods to ospreys and hen harriers, otters, red squirrels, pine martens, salmon leaping at the Falls of Shin and dolphins in the Moray Firth. Nearby Loch Fleet is a national nature reserve.

The Glenmorangie distillery is half an hour away and has a well stocked shop. Clyneleish, Balblair, Glen Ord and Old Poultney distilleries are also not too far away.

Or you could just relax in Achue, read, have a drink, unwind and enjoy the fresh air, views and passing wildlife from the sun lounge. One visitor joked that he couldn’t sleep “because of the quiet”: other guests bring their telescope and enjoy the stars unaffected by any other lights.

If all that sounds too energetic, then there are good restaurants in the area serving local produce in comfortable friendly surroundings or visit local craft shops or museums.
